Playing their last game in 2006 Bomere Heath caused a major upset when they travelled to Bayston Hill to take on previously unbeaten Three Fishes and coming away 5-4 winners.
In a game riddled with individual defensive errors it was left to 16 year Matthew Jones to steal the glory with a well taken hat trick, his first at senior level.
With conditions difficult under foot Bomere started brightly and took the lead after 6 mins when Matthew Jones glanced home from inside the six yard box after a long throw from Chris Stevens had deceived the home defence.
As the game settled down both teams enjoyed good possession but it was Bomere who extended their lead after 33 mins when Jones latched on to a Danny Stevens through ball to drill home his second from just inside the box.
The home team reduced the deficit with a well worked goal on 38 mins. With the game evenly balanced nobody could have predicted the flurry of goals which preceded the half time break to.
On 40 mins Bomere regained their two goal advantage when the home keeper helped another long throw from Chris Stevens into his own net.
Undeterred by this setback Three Fishes showed their battling qualities and helped by a combination of poor defending and goalkeeping levelled the game with two goals in three minutes.
However the scoring did not finish there as Bomere responded by taking the lead once again. It was another long throw in from Chris Stevens which caused the problem and resulted in a defender heading past his own keeper.
Five goals in seven minutes, breathtaking stuff indeed.

Playing up the slope in the second half Bomere were expecting an onslaught from the home team and they weren’t disappointed.Showing why they are undefeated in the league the Three Fishes team pushed forward and it was no suprise when on 55 mins they levelled the scores at 4-4.Again some poor defending from a corner allowed the opposition a free header which they duly accepted.
The equaliser was the wake up call which Bomere needed and gradually they got themselves back into the game. After going close on a couple of occassions it was left to Matthew Jones to fire home what proved to be the winning goal from a narrow angle on 67 mins to complete his hat trick.
The remaining 20 minutes were evenly balanced with Bomere finally defending resolutely at the back whilst always looking dangerous on the break.
In a hard fought game the victory was well deserved and Bomere can take heart from this performance when they resume their fixtures in the new year.
